White Grubs and Japanese Beetles, OH MY!

2005 Fall Japanese Beetle Damage Evaluation.

Well the season of Japanese Beetles is coming to an end, and the most damage I see is:

  • Many holes in my favorite trees' leaves.
  • Damage in my yard.

Now the hole in my favorite tree's leaves seem to have been less than what it could be since I used Bayer Advanced™ Tree & Shrub Insect Control in July. At least there are more leaves this year verses what I remember last year with a tree almost bald.

As for the damage in my yard, it seems that that is because of the slope I live on. When I applied Milky Spore in the past, I covered my yard. So the damage seems to have done this, it started next to my property, killing and turning the grass brown. I started out kind of like a circle, but changed shape and appeared the grubs on the down hill side moved faster than the uphill side. The dead patch seemed to almost 'spill' over into my yard. Didn't progress too far, a few feet into my yard, but I do have a dead patch to cover and seed. I have to admit, one badly Japanese Beetled damaged area of my lawn is better than what I've dealt with in the past.

Conclusion: My yard is on a slope, with a neighbor uphill of me. The Milky Spore must have moved downhill, having a harder time uphill. If in the future I use MilkySpore, I'll remember to go several feet past my property lines to get good coverage of my land.
