Tree's sick, need to feed.

We have a few trees on our small property, so I figure it's in my interest to ensure their health. One tree looks very sick, so trying to figure out what is wrong. In the mean time, I buy tree feeding spikes for all the trees. While digging small holes for the spikes (in the spring I hammered them in, and most broke)I find weird things, white large maggots. Little research proves they are grubs. I ask my neighbors and they say, they are everywhere, and my neighbor says that's why my lawn looks dead after winter, and why my neighbors yards are brown. My yard is heavily infested with grubs and my neighbors around me are too. I am told to poison my yard if I want any chance of getting a good looking yard. Oh, I am told the grubs are the young of the beetles that will soon strip my smaller trees bare in a little while. Once again, I have to go to the Internet to figure out what my neighbor is talking about.
